Important Community Update | Wetlands

Shellharbour City Council has recently advised that it has received several complaints about alleged anti-social behaviour and damage to environmentally sensitive sites within the wetlands areas in 1881 Tullimbar (refer to Figure 1).

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that these areas are environmentally sensitive wetlands and are not Council-owned but are privately owned land. Therefore, we ask that residents and visitors please avoid entering these areas.

Pending Council approvals, wetland rehabilitation works are planned to be undertaken in these wetland areas in 2023.

Additional announcements include local infrastructure development, great feedback from our residents about living in the estate plus exciting activities in our thriving community.

Over 90 homes are now occupied in 1881 Tullimbar and more than 100 homes under construction. Rain in recent weeks has helped our landscaping program with approx. 3,200 trees now planted. New outdoor recreational facilities for the community

Dahua Group (Dahua) recently completed the first stage of its $1.5 million outdoor recreational facilities in 1881 Tullimbar

These works, designed by landscape architect Cardno include three expansive parks, interactive playgrounds, exercise equipment, BBQ areas, walk and bike paths, shelters, kick-about areas and green open spaces for outdoor recreational pursuits.

Mina Hanna, Development Manager at Dahua Group comments, “Delivering high quality community amenities is an integral part of our work. All new recreational facilities in 1881 Tullimbar provide easy access to open green spaces, placing a higher value on the development and give a sense of place and ownership to residents. The park spaces encourage healthy lifestyles through social interaction and play, availability of exercise equipment and passive spaces for quiet reflection.”

Melanie Shea, Landscape Architect at Cardno comments, “The design intent was to create an easily accessible network of green spaces catering to a variety of needs and abilities with a focus on physical and social health. The design considers how people move through and use the space, while providing opportunities for interaction with and appreciation of the natural environment and riparian corridor beyond.

“The inclusive nature of the design provides accessible pathways throughout the site with a number of access points, structured and unstructured play elements and several seating opportunities. BBQ’s, shelters and seating provided near the playground allow passive surveillance and opportunities for meeting and gathering. A number of exercise stations deliver an activity circuit along the footpath for physical activity while kickabout spaces enable both passive and active pursuits”.

Live the lifestyle in Macquarie Valley

The new master-planned residential community is nestled between the mountains and the sea, giving residents an abundance of options when it comes to leisure activities. There are local attractions that appeal to nature lovers, foodies, adventure seekers, transport enthusiasts, young families, and more.

A bounty of possibilities for nature lovers

Macquarie Valley is home to Macquarie Marshes, one of the largest remaining semi-permanent wetland systems in inland Australia, blessed with some of the largest-scale waterbird breeding ever recorded in Australia.

From 1881 Tullimbar, you’ll be a quick eight-minute drive to Macquarie Pass National Park, where you can walk through the rainforest and towering eucalypts and experience scenic views, picnicking, and bushwalking along the Illawarra escarpment.

Don your hiking boots and explore rare rainforests, waterfalls, and hidden beaches on the Cascades and Clover Hill trails. While there, visit Bass Point Reserve, a place of significant cultural and natural heritage, which you can explore on a self-guided indigenous walk.

Foodies: Have your appetites satisfied

Visit nearby Shellharbour Village and enjoy the oceanfront café strip with its great mix of outdoor cafes, award-winning restaurants, and famous fish and chips. After your meal, you can also visit an eclectic range of specialty boutique shops that offer a fantastic afternoon of browsing.

Just 25 minutes via the picturesque Macquarie Pass is the Southern Highlands town of Robertson, a town that is famous for its pies. Robertson Pie Shop sells savoury and sweet pies, using mostly local ingredients.

The Robertson Cheese Store has Australian and imported cheese, local produce, and a range of gourmet products. It also houses a variety of specialty stores including clothing and homewares, plus a cafe onsite.

Adventure seekers have it all covered

While the beaches of Shellharbour are idyllic, what lies under the water is just as appealing for those who love diving and snorkelling. Shellharbour is home to Bass Point Reserve, a relatively undiscovered gem with several shipwrecks and a plethora of sea life.

If you prefer to be on top of the water, then try your hand at stand-up paddle-boarding on Lake Illawarra. With an area of 33km2, Lake Illawarra has no less than 13 boat ramps, making it a popular spot for fishing, prawning, and all water sports.

Also close to 1881 Tullimbar is the Greenvalleys Mountainbike Park, located in the foothills of the Macquarie Pass National Park. The park has a variety of trails and there are regular clinics and competitive days held.

Learn about transport history

Also nearby, at Albion Park is the HARS Aviation Museum, where you can sit in the pilot’s seat of an F-111 fighter jet or walk the wing of the record-breaking Qantas 747-400. The town is also home to Australia’s largest annual civilian air show, Wings Over Illawarra, held each May at Shellharbour Airport.

If you prefer locomotives, visit the Illawarra Light Rail Museum, also at Albion Park, where you can enjoy a ride in carriages from the golden age of rail travel, hop on a steam train or diesel train, and circle the grounds on a miniature train.

Enjoy some family fun

Just 15 minutes away is Jamberoo Action Park, a water theme park offering world-class rides and attractions in a well maintained, natural setting on a picturesque hill. Hold on tight when you tackle to fantastic toboggan ride.

Another great family outing is to enjoy the beautiful beaches on the Shoalhaven coast. From forest-backed coves to the stunning white sands of Jervis Bay, the Shoalhaven area is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in NSW. Discover deserted stretches of sand, amazing coral reefs, and dolphins frolicking just offshore.
